from "Chronic Hollow" by Ida Applebroog

While at MoMA today I discovered this eerie piece (a piece of a piece) by New York artist
Ida Applebroog.

Doves @ Sole Food/close-up

I love these characters! It's a close-up from one of over a dozen canvases on display at Sole Food, a cool new sneaker gallery up the block from Pearl Paint's framing shop.

C215 in "Junk Store"

This piece is one of many in Chris's solo exhibit "Junk Store" at Ad Hoc Art. His installation is stunning. This may be my favorite exhibit of the year. It continues through 1/9.

AIKO in "The Piece Process"

I generally avoid openings since it's difficult to focus on art among crowds. As I was already on the LES this evening, I stopped by the opening of "The Piece Process." I was drawn to a few pieces, including this one, but I'll have to return when I can really see what's there.

Kit Rank @ McKee Gallery

The KAWS exhibit motivated me to make my way to 57th Street. While there, I checked out a few other exhibits. Kit Rank's was a favorite; I was glad to discover her vibrantly interesting artwork.

Alexsandra Mir @ Mary Boone

This is a small section of a floor-to-ceiling installation of thousands of buttons designed by Alexsandra Mir.

Kaws @ Gering & López Gallery

Though almost too perfect in their execution, Kaws' pieces on exhibit at Gering & López Gallery are a visual feast. I don't see many exhibits by artists who are identified with graffiti in this part of town. The receptionist told me that it was this gallery's best-attended exhibit -- with thousands of people passing through. Impressive!

Siloette in "Top of the Line"

This piece by Siloette is among those featured in Cope2's "Top of the Line." I had tried to stop by on opening night this past Thursday, but the line went down the block. This afternoon I had the space to myself. I loved the eclectic mix of artists that includes Cope2, Futura, Fafi, Revok, Shepard Fairey and Ron English. Sadly, the exhibit remains up for only two more days.

Graffiti: Spirit of an Age

Everything from this sculpture by Revs to pop surrealism by Ezo to wild-style by Sharp is in this intriguing tribute to graffiti at Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos, 450 Grand Concourse. Curated by Wippler, the exhibit continues through 2/7.

Off the Concourse in the 180's, these memorial walls seem to be everywhere.

Nothing But Tags and Throw-Ups

I went up to Washington Heights today with Isaac. As always I had my camera with me, but there was nothing but tags and throw-ups for blocks on end.

Suicide Bomber by Lisa van Noorden

Dutch artist Lisa van Noorden has created cuddly dolls of children soldiers, along with cuddly dolls of "lucky" children. Each child tells his or her own story. The remarkable series -- likely to appeal to children, as well as adults, -- is on exhibit at umbrage in Dumbo through 1/10. This image is of "Labeeb from Palestine."

This is the cover of the newly published URBAN IRAN (Mark Batty, NYC). A1one, clearly a legend in the Middle East, is among the artists featured.

The Fabulous Mefisto

I was so glad to meet Mefisto and see his amazing artwork. Here he is in his home with a dissident newspaper that publishes his work. His art on the streets in Bogota is among the best.

from Gringolandia @ Honey Space

There's always something interesting and off-beat happening at Honey Space (148 11th Avenue, between 21st and 22nd streets). This time the entire space was transformed by Mickey Western into a wacky space-age adventure that celebrates the outlaw spirit. It continues through 11/22.

Zak Smith @ Fredericks & Freiser

I discovered Zak Smith's zany graphics in a magazine that he and his friends self-published a number of years ago. Since, I've seen Zak's work in a number of venues including the 2004 Whitney Biennial. I passed this new exhibit of his work and collaborations by chance today and stopped in to see it. This piece is from a huge installation of dozens of graphics. Each one captivates.

Doze Green @ Jonathan LeVine

I'm so glad I got to see this exhibit of Doze Green's recent works before it closed. I loved his juxtaposition of forms, shapes, colors, notions, textures and materials. Each piece is a marvel.

The Sessions by Native and Zen Two

When I met Native and Zen Two in Paris three years ago, they told me about a book they were working on together. What a surprise to find their book of intriguing calligraphy/drawing in Strands this afternoon!
