Max Ginsburg @ Gallery 1199

Jonathan Pincus introduced me to Max Ginsburg's artwork a number of years back. But I didn't get to meet him until recently. His current exhibit @ the Martin Luther King, Jr. Labor Center is a testament to his extraordinary skills and acute social consciousnes.

Shepard Fairey @ the Corcoran

I'm so glad I had the opportunity to hear Shepard Fairey speak at the Corcoran this past Friday. Referring to himself as a "social commentary artist," he came across as witty, humble and somewhat idealistic. Sensitive to the criticism he has received for "selling out," he emphasized that his major goal is to create provocative art that is "accessible to the public." The money he has earned through his work as a graphic designer, he explained, has gone largely to fiance the street art he creates. Street art is an act of defiance, he reiterated, as all street artists risk arrest in getting their work out. And although this was not mentioned, Fairey seems well aware of the privileges his race and class confer upon him.

Nalini Malani @ Arario Gallery

I discovered this by chance. The entire exhibit of 42 paintings and sound mesmerized me.

Nyack Sticker

I didn't expect to find any "street art" in Nyack. But there were quite a few stickers and at least one of these (in different colors and variations!) on every block. I also noticed quite a few anti-Bush stickers.

from Aaron Johnson's "Star-Crossed"

I discovered this amazing exhibit of political art while walking up West 25th on my way to DFN. All of these are created on American flags by Aaron Johnson, a Brooklyn-based artist. The exhibit continues through October 18th @ Stefan Stux Gallery, 530 West 25th Street.

Man Eater by Aurel Schmidt

Always curious to see what's happening @ Deitch, I stopped by earlier this week and discovered this eerily stunning piece done with graphite and colored pencils. Every piece in this exhibit @ 76 Grand Street is engaging.
