Close-up of Roof from 7 Train

When I left 5Pointz yesterday, Meres told me about an artist up on the roof painting a humongous Biggie Smalls. I actually caught a glimpse of the artist and the piece from the 7 train on my way back to the city!

Michael Bevilacqua @ Gering & López

Described as a visual diary of the artist's life, Michael Bevilacqua's "Placebo Effect" throbs with energy. I'm not quite sure if it's working as a visual diary, but the artist's use of vibrant color as he weaves cartoony/streety images together gave me the lift I needed today!

The Ever-Evolving Obey Mural

It had been a month since I'd last seen the Shepard Fairey May Day mural. I didn't know what to expect. But I didn't expect to see anything as forbidding as this--

Graffiti NYC @ Benrimon Contemporary

Going through my emails this past weekend, I discovered three graffiti exhibits -- all happening now in NYC gallery spaces. (I don't remember a summer with more than one or two). This afternoon I headed down to Chelsea to check out "Graffiti NYC: Artists of the Third Rail." With installations, works on canvas and first-rate photos, it's an impressive homage to mostly old school graf.

The Neverending MBW Extravaganza

MBW in "Icons"
Originally uploaded by LoisInWonderland
While in the Meatpacking District to check out the street art exhibit at Leo Kesting, I did my usual meandering. I did not expect to find MBW's "happening" still happening -- and constantly changing. When I asked the rather staid young man working there if it's becoming a permanent landmark, he reluctantly told me that it continues through September. Meanwhile, visitors were still coming in and out -- though the downstairs was blocked off, as were the bathrooms. I didn't hear any English, though. But quite a bit of French and Italian.

Cekis in the Heights

I hadn't been to Washington Heights in a while. But on my way back from New Jersey earlier, I decided to check out a few blocks in the neighborhood of the George Washington Bridge. There wasn't much happening. But I did discover a wonderful mural -- urging folks to remember their rights in the face of police misconduct -- chiefly executed by Cekis.

In Vancouver

Originally uploaded by LoisInWonderland
Mostly hidden behind view in the back of Marc Emory's Cannabis Culture Headquarters -- an amazing space that rivals even what I've seen in Amsterdam -- is some of the most interesting graffiti in Vancouver. When we asked if we could get a close-up, a lovely young woman who works there escorted us up a huge flight of stairs where we saw image after image of cannabis-inspired graffiti!

Unlike Seattle and Portland, Vancouver has a first-rate graf shop that also serves as a gallery with some amazing art. (I fell in love with Soakr's characters!) Located at 434 Homer Street, it's a graf lover's wonderland!
